 요동백 김응하장군의 애국심과 정화 3.
--광해군 11년(1619) 9월 27일 묘 앞에 신도비를 세웠으며 비문은 판중추부사 龍洲(용주) 趙炯
(조형)이 지은 것이다.
--신도비 대석은 모두 상면에 복련을 조각한 장방형이며 비두는 화강암 옥개로 되어 있다. 묘비
는 온전하나 신도비는 전면에 총탄 자국으로 인하여 많이 파손되었다.

▣ 金應河(김응하) 소개
1. 사냥을 좋아한 소년.
--김응하의 본은 안동, 자는 景羲(경희)이며, 1580년(선조 13년) 3월 철원군 어운면 갈운동(현 하
갈리)에서 고려 僉議中贊 上將軍 忠烈公 金方慶(첨의중찬 상장군 충렬공 김방경)의 10대손 地四
(지사)의 장남으로 출생하였다.
--응하 소년은 숙성하여 어른스러웠으며, 효성과 우애가 두터웠다. 가난한 농가에서 태어난 그에
게는 사냥한 새나 짐승으로 부모님께 반찬거리를 마련해 드리는 것이 큰 즐거움이었는데, 응하의
나이 14세 때에 임진왜란 중 전염병으로 양친을 잃고 지성껏 묘자리를 구하여 장군 두 사람이 난
다는 명당을 얻어 안장하였다.
--응하는 아우 應海(응해)와 함께 사냥하러 다니기를 좋아하였다. 하루는 새사냥을 나갔다가 범
을 만나 고두리살로 범의 정수리를 쏘았는데, 화살이 정수리를 뚫고 贓腑(장부)까지 관통했다. 급
소를 맞은 범은 꼼짝없이 앉은 채로 죽고 말았다. 그는 기운이 세어 단검하나로 산돼지를 잡았고,
짐 실은 말을 도랑에서 올리기도 하였으며, 18세 때에는 덕령산에서 주먹으로 범을 때려잡는 일
도 있어서 김장군이란 별호로 불리어지게 되었다고 한다.
2. 무과급제.
--청년 응하는 팔척 장신에 몸집도 우람했으며, 기상이 호걸스러웠다. 한번에 황소다리 하나를
다 먹어치웠으며, 남달리 술을 좋아하여 두세말 술을 앉은 자리에서 다 마시곤 했지만, 정신을 잃
거나 쓰러지는 일이 없었다. 한 때는 야생마를 얻어 길들인 일도 있었고, 均田使(균전사) 밑에 量
田監(양전감)으로 일하면서 농민들 편에 서서 정의로운 선행을 하여 칭송을 받았다.
--24세 때 여름, 강원도 관찰사 朴承宗(박승종)이 관내 순시차 왔을 때 무술대회를 열었는데, 응하
는 뛰어난 무예로 박관찰사의 눈에 들었고 병서를 공부하여 과거에 응시하라고 권고를 받았다. 그
는 漢灘江(한탄강) 상류의 경승지 칠만바위를 중심으로 심신의 수련을 계속하여 병서를 열심히 읽
고 깨우쳤다.
--26세에 무과에 급제하였고 이내 함경도 鍾城(종성)에 변경수비의 임무를 맡고 부임, 삭막한 국
경지대에서의 처음 겪는 타향살이의 어려움을 겪으며 투철한 책임감으로 성실하게 업무를 수행하
였다. 한 때 강원도 관찰사로 있었던 박승종이 전라도 관찰사로 가게 되었는데 이 때 응하는 군관
으로 따라가게 되었다. 그 당시 선조의 국상중이어서 관리들의 주색 풍류를 금하고 근신하는 생활
을 하게 되었다. 청년 응하는 절제하며 근신하는 생활을 잘 하였으므로 박승종의 두터운 신임을
얻게 되었다.
3. 서민적인 목민관.
--응하는 31세 때 都體察使 李恒福(도체찰사 이항복)의 추천으로 정 5품 문관인 함경도의 慶源府
判官(경원부 판관)에 발탁되었다. 후에 중앙관서인 五衛都摠府(오위도총부)의 經歷(경력)을 거
쳐, 동급 문관인 함경도 삼수군수로 나가게 되었다. 삼수군은 갑산부와 함께 압록강 상류에 접하
고 있어서 풍속과 습관조차 다를 만큼 교통이 불편하여 “삼수갑산에 가는 한이 있어도”라는 속담
이 있을 정도로 깊은 산중인데 삼동의 추위도 대단하며 대부분 주민들의 생활이 말할 수 없이 가
난하였다. 김응하 군수는 훗날 淸白吏(청백리)가 된 金時讓(김시양 : 옮긴이 주-하담할아버지로
추정됨)이란 막역한 친구가 보내준 한지를 솜대신 넣어 지어 입고 찬 바람을 면하였다. 그후 그는
정 3품 무관인 兵馬虞候(병마우후)를 제수 받고 함경도 鏡城(경성)에 있는 北兵營(북병영)에 근무
하였다. 그 때 병마절도사 金景瑞(김경서)의 지시를 따라 府城(부성)의 동문과 남문의 문루와 망
대를 修築(수축)하게 되었는데, 士卒(사졸)들이 힘드는 일을 할 때에는 김응하 우후도 같이 일하
면서 밤낮으로 감독하였으므로 그 큰 공사를 한 달만에 훌륭하게 마쳤다.
--39세 되던 1619년 여름 편안도 助防將(조방장)겸 선천군수로 가게 되었다. 효성과 우애와 의리
가 있는 사람들은 薦擧(천거)하게 하여 예를 다하여 대접하였고 재주있는 사람들을 수습하여 그
앞길을 열어주었다. 또 지혜롭고 용맹스런 사람을 불러 신임하니 백성들은 모두 김군수를 존경하
였다. 사생활에 있어서는 근엄하고 청렴하였으며 10여년 공직에 머물며 상관에게 아첨하거나 부
하에게 교만하지 않았고 백성을 대할 때는 체통을 차리는 일이 없이 늘 서민적인 사람이었다.
4. 구원군 좌영장으로 출정하다.
--1616년에 後金(후금)을 세운 여진족 建州衛(건주위)의 추장 누루하치(奴兒吟赤 ; 노아음적)는
차츰 그 세력을 확장하여 만주 땅을 차지한 후 1618년에는 撫順(무순), 淸河(청하) 등지를 점령하
고 쇠약해 가는 명나라의 동부지방을 침략하는 것이었는데 명나라는 이에 대항하여 요동군 經略
使(경략사) 곧 총사령관에 楊鎬(양호)를 임명하고 10만 병력을 동원하여 좌. 우. 중. 남의 네길로
나누어 진군하게 하고, 우리 조선에 대하여 원병을 청하는 재촉이 심하였다. 당시 우리나라와 명
나라는 임진왜란 때문에 7년동안이나 많은 인명과 물자의 손실을 입어 국력이 매우 피폐하였고,
명나라는 새로 일어난 후금의 세력을 막아낼 도리가 없어서 구원군을 청하여 온 것이었다. 광해군
은 이 국제정세의 변환기에 처하여 밖으로는 형세관망의 태도를 취하여, 명나라를 저버리지도 후
금의 노여움을 사지도 않는 용의주도한 양단정책을 쓰는 동시에 안으로는 임진왜란에 파괴된 城
池(성지)와 병기를 수리하고 군사를 양성하여 국방경비를 튼튼히 하였던 것이다. 그러나 신흥국
후금을 깔보고 문화가 발달된 명나라를 계속 대국으로 섬겨야 한다는 견해가 지배적이어서 광해
군의 양단정책은 반대에 부딪쳤다. 원병을 거부하던 광해군은 드디어 임진왜란 때 도움을 받은 것
에 대한 의리때문에 보내기로 결정하고 도원수에 姜弘立(강홍립). 부원수에 金景瑞(김경서)를 임
명하고 1만 3천의 평안도 군사를 거느리고 원정하게 하였던 것이다. 이 때 선천군수 김응하는 병
력 3천을 맡은 좌영장에 임명되었다. 그는 자신의 휘하에 中軍(중군)에 車載重(차재중), 千摠(천
총)에 申忠業(신충업). 金堯卿(김요경). 桂如杠(계여강)을 임명하였는데 평소에 모두 김응하를 흠
모하던 충성심이 강한 사람들이었다.
--때는 2월 중순이라 1만 3천의 대군이 압록강 얼음위를 건너가게 되었는데 응하는 주민들에게 싸
리바지를 엮게 해 이를 밟고 지나가게 하니 압록강 이편에서 저편까지 바자를 밟고가는 군사들로
장사진을 이루게 되었다.
5. 조선 원군의 항전.
--좌. 우. 중. 남 네길로 나누어 진군했던 명나라의 십만 대군이 모두 패망하는 안타까운 전황과,
명. 청 두 큰 세력의 운명을 결정한 싸루후산 전투에서 후금의 막강한 세력 앞에 참패해 버린 상황
은 접어 두더라도 기울어 가는 명의 국운과, 이 국면에 처한 조선 원병의 설 자리를 한탄할 수 밖
에 없었다.
--조선 원군의 선발대는 1618년 2월25일 일찌감치 명나라 전략기지인 경마전에 도착하였으며 김
응하 장군은 먼저와 있던 남로군의 유정 도독과 만났다. 유정 도독은 조선군 총사령관인 강홍립
장군의 진군이 더딘 것에 불평을 하였으나, 김장군은 보병이 먼길을 빨리 걸을 수 없었으므로 다
소 늦을 것이 예상되지만 강 도원수는 중영군과 함께 곧 당도할 것이라고 두둔하였다.
--이 날 늦게 조선 원군이 모두 기지에 도착하였으므로 밤에 작전회의를 열어, 남로군이 일선에
나가고 구원부대가 이선에 가다가 적의 대부대를 만나면 앞뒤에서 서로 응하여 나아가 공격하는
椅角進功(의각진공)의 작전을 쓰기로 하였다.
--경마전을 떠난 구원부대는 식량보급이 않되는 와중에도 험로를 무릅쓰고 말의 배에 차는 鴨兒
河(압아하)의 깊은 강물을 건너기도 하는 등 많은 고생을 하면서 3월 1일 馬家寨(마가채)에 도착
하였다.
--김응하 장군은 예하 부대원들에게 “전시의 식량과 병기는 적을 쳐서 빼앗아 얻는 법인데, 지금
되놈의 군사가 많아 보이니 용기를 내라.”하고 사기를 북 돋우니 부대원들은 모두 기운을 내는 것
이었다. 선봉에 선 좌영군은 마가채에서 진군하니 20㎞, 그 사이에 후금의 군대가 수백명 혹은 천
여기가 곳곳에 진을 치고 있었는데 좌영군은 10여개의 堡(보)를 격파하고 많은 적을 베어버리는
등, 큰 전과를 올리기도 했다. 그리고 땅속에 숨겨 놓았던 적의 곡식을 찾아내어 돌절구에 찧어 죽
을 쑤어 먹기도 하면서 고생스럽게 진군하였던 것이다. 한편, 뒤에 떨어져 따라오던 중영군과 우
영군은 도원수 강홍립의 통제를 받아 적과의 접전을 피하고 있었다. 서울을 떠날 때 광해군은 형
세를 보아 향배를 결정하라는 밀지를 도원수 강홍립에게 주었다고 한다.
6. 深河(심하)에서의 혈전.
--김응하 장군은 자기가 생명을 걸고 부대의 전투능력을 최고로 발휘하여 조선 원군이 명나라에
대한 의리를 굳게 지키고 있다는 것을 보여주고, 후금으로 하여금 조선 원군을 얕보지 않도록 과
시해야 하는 막다른 처지에 있음을 인식하였다.
--3월 3일 부차령을 넘은 좌영군은 다음날 심하마을이 앞에 보이는 언덕에 진을 쳤다. 한편, 중영
군과 우영군은 고개 위에 머물러 있었다. 김응하 장군은 진격하지 않고 적을 유인하여 치는 방어
전략을 폈다. 앞 줄에는 포병을, 뒷줄에는 궁노수를 배치하고 진 앞에는 나무를 얽어 가로질러서
적군이 말을 달려 좌영군의 진에 덤비지 못하도록 장애물(拒馬木;거마목)을 쳐 놓았다. 장군기를
휘날리며 선두에서 지휘하던 김장군은 위엄있게 전군에 호령하였다. “듣거라. 총을 든 군사는 화
약을 재고, 활을 든 군사는 살을 메우고 있다가 나의 북소리를 신호로 일제히 사격을 개시하여 끝
까지 힘껏 싸워라. 군졸 한 명이 길목을 굳게 지키면 천명의 적군도 두렵지 않다는 병법의 말은 오
늘의 우리를 두고 한 말이다. ‘必生則死(필생즉사)’요 ‘必死則生(필사즉생)’이니 살겠다는 생각을
버리고 필사의 각오로 전투에 임하라. 명령을 어기는 자는 엄한 군법에 처하겠다.” 잠시 뒤 철갑
을 두른 적의 기마병들이 돌격하여 왔다. 백여미터 안에 다가오자 김장군은 ‘사격개시’의 북을 울
렸다. 많은 적들이 가로막이에 걸려 넘어지고, 총에 맞아 죽고, ‘푸르륵 푸르륵’ 화살소리가 나는대
로 적군들이 말에서 두 팔을 벌리며 땅에 떨어지니, 빈 안장을 업은 말들이 이리 뛰고 저리 뛰고
하였다.
누루하치의 둘째 아들이 앞장서서 큰 소리를 지르며 공격하여 오다가 김장군의 화살에 맞아 땅에
떨어졌다. 장수를 잃은 적군이 사기를 잃고 퇴각하자 좌영군의 사기는 더욱 고조되었다. 첫 접전
을 승리로 장식한 것이다. 잠시 후 병력을 보충한 적군은 누루하치의 장남 貴盈哥(귀영가)의 결사
대 백여기를 앞세우고 다시 공격하여 왔다. 파상공격이다. 김장군은 계속 북을 울리며 독전한다.
사기가 충천한 좌영군은 결사적으로 총탄과 화살을 퍼부어 또 적을 격퇴시켰다. 이러한 접전이 세
차례, 번번이 아군이 승리하였고, 적군은 베어 넘기는 삼대처럼 쓰러졌으며 살아남은 이는 도망
쳐 버렸다. 그런데 갑자기 맹렬한 회오리 바람이 일더니 황사강풍을 몰아와 티끌이 사방으로 날리
어서 좌영군을 에워싸며 얼글을 때리고 햇빛을 가리어 총과 활을 쏠 수 없게 되었다.
--후금은 “이 때다.“하고 힘을 모아 공격하여 좌영군의 측면으로 총과 화살을 비오듯 퍼부어 댔
다. 그러나 김응하 장군은 최후까지 싸워 옥쇄하겠다는 각오로 말에서 내려 큰 버드나무를 의지하
며 활을 당겼다. 김장군은 필사의 결의를 보이므로 군사들은 모두 피투성이가 되도록 김장군을 따
라 싸우며 항복치 아니하였다. 김장군은 활을 쏘는데 유명한 그의 활솜씨는 다른 장군들의 화살보
다 갑절이나 멀리 나가고, 빠르며, 한 대도 빗맞힘이 없어 한 화살에 적병을 셋(一矢三殺;일시삼
살)이나 꿰 뚫었다. 한 낮부터 해가 기울 때까지 김장군은 계속하여 활을 쏘아 삼백여개의 화살이
다 떨어져 버렸다. 김장군은 허리에 찼던 장검을 빼어 적을 쳤다. 목이 잘려 구르는 소리가 ‘뜨르
르 뜨르르’ 산이 무너지는 듯 하였다. 그러나 김장군은 운이 다하였는지 장검이 부러졌으나 젊은
시절에 호랑이를 때려잡던 굳센 맨주먹을 불끈 쥐고 더욱 분발하였다. 이 때 창을 든 적병이 버드
나무 뒤에 숨어서 김장군을 기습하였다. 마침내 김장군은 적병의 창에 맞아 쓰러지고 말았다.
--용맹스럽게 항전하던 김장군을 잃자 조선 원군의 사기는 떨어져 버리고 사상자 수는 늘어만 갔
다. 이에 도원수 강홍립은 남은 군사를 이끌고 스스로 무방을 풀어 적장에 항복하였다.
7. 최고의 영예.
--조정에서는 국위를 선양한 김장군의 전공을 높이 찬양하여 그가 전사한 다음달에 병조판서를
추증하였고, 5월에는 旌忠祠(정충사)를 용만강가에 짓고 충혼비를 세워 충의의 혼을 위로하였다.
또한 조정에서는 忠武公 (충무공)의 시호를 내렸고 명나라의 신종황제는 요동백(遼東伯)을 追封
(추봉)하였다.
--1620년 조정에서는 김장군에게 다시 영의정을 추증하였는데, 이처럼 빠른 기간에 전직 군수에
게 영의정을 추증함은 파격적인 대우요, 최고의 영예였다.
--1621년 9월에 訓練都監(훈련도감)을 시켜 김장군의 사적을 적은 忠烈錄(충렬록)을 출판 간행하
였다. 전에는 김장군을 추모하는 사당이 네 군데나 있었는데 고향인 철원에 있는 포충사(褒忠祠)
에서는 지금도 매년 음력 2월 8월의 中丁日(중정일)에 철원향교 주관으로 제향을 받들고 있다.
12) 양화의 버들과 심하(深河)의 버들 (2001. 12. 30. 윤만(문) 제공)

지금은 천주교 성지가 있는 절두산의 옛 이름은 들머리, 잠두봉, 용두봉이라 하였고 김포와 강화
로 연결되는 나루가 있었는데 이름하여 양화진(楊花津)이라 하였습니다. 바로 이 나루목에 역신
강홍립(姜弘立)이 살았던 강정(江亭)이 있었습니다.
그래서 영조(英祖)때 양화진을 읊은 한 무명시인의 시에 『양화의 버들도 심하(深河)의 버들도 버
들은 버들인데 왜 이다지 같은 버들이 다른가』라는 대목이 있습니다.
필자는 이 시구가 뜻하는 두 버들의 차이에서 한국인의 두 유형, 양화형과 심하형을 역사적으로
부각시켜 볼 필요를 느꼈다. 여기서 말하는 양화의 버들은 강홍립형 인간을 뜻한다. 광해군 10년
명나라는 요동에서 세력을 부식해 가는 누루하치(淸太祖)를 협공하고자 조선에다 출병을 요구해
왔다.
조정에서는 당시 참판이던 강홍립을 오도도원수(五道都元帥)로 임명하고 2만 병력을 주어 출정하
게 했는데 이 졸장부는 부차령(富車嶺)에서 적에게 포위당하자 목숨만 구해주면 투항하겠다고 교
섭, 반역을 한 것이다.
그리하여 적진에서 우대를 받고 있던 강홍립은 고국에서 그의 가족이 학대를 받는다는 밀고를 받
았다. 그는 고국을 휩쓸겠다고 소청하여 3만의 대호군(大胡軍)을 이끌고 우리 북방을 정벌했다.
강화가 진행되었을 때도 강홍립은 호군의 대표로 나와 떵떵거렸고, 우리 조정에서는 이 역적의 노
여움을 풀고자 갖은 미소책을 다 썼다. 그의 서자를 보내어 가족 학대의 밀고가 거짓이라는 것을
변명하는가 하면 그의 삼촌인 강곤(姜 )에게 벼락 벼슬을 주고는 강화 회담장에 보내어 설득을
하기까지 했다.
일개 역적에게 아부하고 미소책을 써야하는 한국의 약소성은 우리들을 슬프게 한다. 그러나 강홍
립이 모친이 죽었다는 소식을 듣고 고국에 돌아왔을 때 조정의 신하들은 그의 목을 베어 효시(梟
示)할 것을 강력히 주장했다. 하지만 청나라의 강대함이 두려워 그에게 눈 한번 흘기지 못했던 이
한국적 상황이 더욱 우리를 비통하게 하는 것이다.
그렇지만 민중의 증오는 면할 수가 없었다. 비록 소채를 파는 등짐장수일지라도 이 양화진 강정
에 사는 강홍립에게는 무우 한 뿌리 팔지 않았고, 염전에서는 소금 배의 뱃전에 흩어진 소금 한
줌 못주워 가도록 경계했던 것이다. 그가 굶어 죽게되자 나라에서는 특정 상인을 정해 쌀과 소금
을 공급하도록 하였다. 그 집에는 양식 나르는 사람이외엔 일년 내내 한 사람도 드나들지 않았다
한다. 드나들기는커녕 어른은 물론 아이들까지도 양화진 나루를 지나다가 그 강정이 보이기만 하
면 침 세번 뱉는 풍속까지 생겨났다 한다.
심하는 중국 요동의 한 지명으로 강홍립의 좌영부장(左營部將)인 김응하(金應河) 장군이 전사(戰
死)한 땅이다. 키가 8척이요, 능히 큰 소 한 마리를 한꺼번에 먹고 승마도 잘 하였다. 그는 사랑하
는 호마(胡馬)를 타고 달리며 말 위에서 투구, 갑옷, 활집, 전통 등을 벗어 땅에 던지고 말에서 뛰
어 내려 모두 주워서 다시 말 위에 뛰어 올랐으니, 그 낼래고 용맹함이 놀라왔다 한다.
도원수 강홍립이 항복하고 그의 지휘관인 좌영장(左營將) 김경서(金景瑞)도 붙잡히고 난 다음 일
개 부장인 김응하는 심하의 진지를 지키다가 끝내 처절한 전사를 하였다.
그의 전사는 이렇다.
군보통인(軍保通引)이던 김철현(金鐵賢)도 김응하 장군을 따라 큰 버드나무에 기대어 수백 호병
을 단 둘이 맞아 싸웠다. 김철현은 엎드려 화살을 집어 주고 김 장군은 화살로 대적을 했다. 그러
나 적의 수천 화살과 맞아 싸우다가 화살이 다하자 칼로 수십명을 베고는 버드나무 밑에 쓰러져
죽었다.
김 장군의 몸에 박힌 화살은 셀 수 없을 정도였고 방패삼았던 버드나무도 화살나무가 되어 있었
다 한다. 호적(胡敵)들은 장군의 용맹에 탄복하고 그 버드나무를 〈장군 버들(將軍柳)〉이라 명명
하였으며 이 장군 버들은 현재도 그곳 지명으로 남아 있다 한다.
곧 〈심하의 버들〉은 이 장군 버들을 뜻한 것이다. 양화의 버들과 심하의 버들의 그 까마득한 역
사의 거리에서 필자는 현기증을 느끼고 있다. 옳고 그름이 이토록 이지러질 수 있는 가능성의 거
리, 그 거리를 이 무명 시인은 필자에게 손가락 펴고 뼘질을 시켜야만 했나 모를 일이다.
그 후 그(강홍립)은 강정 대들보에 목매어 죽었는데 그 스스로가 목을 매었다고도 하고 또 가족들
이 목매어 죽였다고도 한다.
그의 시체는 선산에서도 소외되어 떨어져 묻혔으며, 지나가는 사람들은 〈강로(姜虜)의 무덤〉이
라고 침을 뱉고 다녔다 한다. "끝"

●천하장사와 천하절색 - 김응하 장군과 김낭자
강원도 철원, 어느 후미진 산골에서였다. 한 젊은이가 철퇴를 쥐고 사냥을 하고 있었다.
"곰이닷!"
젊은이는 산등성이를 돌아 나가는 곰의 머리 쪽을 겨냥하고 철퇴를 던졌다. 곰은 제 자리에서 두
어 바퀴 맴을 돌다 쓰려져 버렸다.
다음 골짜기에서 표범을 만났을 때도 젊은이는 철퇴를 던져 표범을 잡았다.
스물 네 살의 젊은이는 사냥의 명수였다.
곰의 배를 갈라 웅담을 꺼내고 표범의 가죽을 벗겨 챙긴 다음 젊은이는 집으로 향했다.
고개 하나를 넘고 두 번째 고개를 넘어서는데 젊은이 앞에 늙구스레한 나무꾼이 막아섰다.
